You found the perfect hairstyle. It goes amazing with the dress you got that’s to-die for. Everything is just right until… you wake up and the humidity is off the charts, your hair is limp and won’t hold a curl, it’s so damp outside you feel like you just stepped out of the shower… It’s every girl’s nightmare when it comes to prom. Hair drama. How can you avoid it?

"I live in a humid place and my style just isn’t working for me!" There are some things you just can’t control – like the weather. If you live in a place that has high humidity, expect to have to deal with that when choosing your final style. Naturally curly hair won’t stay straight and naturally straight hair won’t hold curl as well. You can add tons and tons of product meant to help control hair in this situation, but the odds are you will just feel like you have a bunch of stuff caked in your hair and it will look crusty. Instead of working against the weather, use it to your advantage. You know how your hair is going to react to this weather because it’s normal. If your hair is curly, go with a style that uses the curl to its best advantage to eliminate the stress of getting all the kinks out. Got straight hair? There are so many styles you can have that look amazing! Your problem will most likely be getting some volume into it and keeping it there. Use a root boost product and a little teasing, then have a stylist pile it up on your head in a fun messy bun. It doesn’t have to look flat and boring just because it’s straight.

"The weather is fine, but I’m just having a REALLY bad hair day. What gives?" We all wake up with funky hair sometimes. It’s just your bad luck that today is prom. What are your options? Wash it with a clarifying (swimming) shampoo. Sometimes there is just a lot of build-up on your hair that makes it hard to deal with. You don’t have to have day-old hair to get a great style. If your hair feels icky, wash it. It’s not against the rules. Using a clarifying shampoo on your hair will strip all the gook off, then you can use your normal shampoo/conditioner to get the softness back and dry it with a mousse or other styling product to help with manageability.

"I just got my hair cut and colored and now it won’t work with the style I found." This is always a bad idea. Never get your hair changed drastically before a big event unless you do it to achieve the look you want for that event. If something goes wrong with your color the morning of prom, there isn’t time to fix it and make it look right. If you go in for a trim and the stylist cuts off 4 inches because she thinks you needed it, you can’t grow that back in a few hours. Always choose your prom hairstyle before changing your hair to make sure your new style will work with the prom style.

Keep in mind the style you want, but always have one or two in reserve just in case something goes wrong and you need a back-up. Be flexible with your finished style and roll with the punches a little bit. Don’t be too much of a diva to work with your surroundings or your night will be a little on the miserable side, and that’s definitely not what you want to remember! Hair is a big part of the picture, but it should be fun. Enjoy it!
