Finding The Right Prom Hairstyle For Your Face Shape

Finding the perfect style can be a challenge, so this is a guide to help you find the perfect hairstyle for you. You consider your body type when choosing the right dress, you think about your eye color and lip shape when choosing your makeup, and how your feet look in open toed shoes before buying those strappy sandals, so don’t forget to factor in the shape of your face when picking out the perfect hairstyle to go with your look. The shape of your face can totally change to look of the exact same style from one person to the next. How can you know what face shape you have and what will work best for you? Read on.

The first thing you need to do is determine your face shape. If you don’t already know what that is, have someone take a picture of you and print it out. Use a black or colored marker to outline your face all the way around. If you have bangs or face framing in your face, pull it back so you can get a better image. You can toss the pic when you’re done, so don’t worry if it looks awful. If this sounds like too much work, just ask a few friends for their opinions. Odds are you will get a fairly accurate answer after the 5th or 6th person gives you their thoughts.

Oval Faces. The perception is that an oval face shape is the most desirable shape to have and therefore, everyone should try to keep their hair framing their face to achieve this illusion. Is it an attractive shape? Sure. Is it ideal? Maybe for some, but other shapes are beautiful too, so don’t get down on yourself if you fall into a different category. If you have an oval face that is in proportion to the rest of your body, congratulations. You can pretty much wear whatever hairstyle appeals to you and it will look fantastic.

Round Faces.Do you like your round face? If you do, don’t do anything to try and hide it. Wear it proud and don’t be afraid to pull your hair back. If you think that your cheeks are too wide, leave some pieces out of the finished style that curl around your cheeks and pull your bangs back into the style. This will give your face the illusion of being longer. Having hair piled up on top of your head will also help add to that illusion and make the distance from the top of your head to your chin look like a greater distance than the horizontal line from ear to ear.

Square Faces. The complaint of a lot of women with this face shape is that they look too manly or not feminine enough. Strong jaws in the past weren’t as popular, but now we all appreciate a strong woman so be proud of that jawline. If you just want to soften it up for prom, though, try wearing a style that puts more hair toward the top of your head, like a chignon or bun. Adding bulk to the top can make the bottom of your face seem less substantial. If your hair is shorter, make sure you have volume on top and keep the ends close together. If they are spread out around your chin your jaw will look that much larger.

Triangle Faces. Sounds like not a real face shape, but some women have very wide foreheads and their faces taper down to a point. If this is you and you want to mask some of that, make sure you have bangs to soften the forehead and leave your hair loose around your jawline. You want to make your jawline appear wider to the eye. Lots of volume and curls around the bottom will help out with that. It doesn’t mean you can’t wear an updo, just keep the focus lower on your head and don’t add much volume to the top.

Diamond Faces. Wide at the cheek and narrow at the top and bottom. It can be hard to mask this if that is what you are trying to do, but it isn’t impossible. You should have bangs all the way across your forehead that are blunt cut or that are a little longer and sweep to one side. This will help make your forehead appear wider to soften the width of your cheekbones. To make your jaw look wider, have hair around the back of your neck that comes forward and curls around to the front. Your hair can be pinned up in the back, but leave pieces out that come forward to widen the jawline.

The bottom line to finding a style that fits your face shape is knowing yourself and what you are comfortable with. If you love the way you look, don’t stress about trying to fit into someone else’s mold of what beauty is. If you have a few things you would like to mask or hide or whatever, don’t be ashamed of that either because no one likes every little thing about themselves. Have fun!
