A million styles to choose from but only one chance to get it right. Prom night and your hair. It can be a little stressful trying to choose the style that’s right for you and different people will give you different reactions and opinions based on their own preferences. So how can you decide what is truly right for you? Following are some tips for you to make things more exciting and less traumatic for you.

Start your search early. Doing this will help you in a lot of ways, but will mostly expose you to the most styles with little pressure to choose just one. Make yourself a little style journal and keep pics of not just your dream dress, but also the make-up and hair and shoes you think would make your night the best. Print pictures from online sources, cut them out of magazines, anywhere you see a picture of hair you like, add it to the journal. When it comes time to choose one you will likely have the perfect style for you at hand.

With so many places to look, where should you start? Online resources are the best because they generally don’t cost anything and you can print the pictures you want without wasting ink on those you don’t. You can buy the magazines, but it takes a little longer to flip through all the pages to find unique styles and there aren’t as many options. Try doing a search for updo’s, half updo’s, formal styles, prom hair… These search terms should be a great place to start.

You’ve got the perfect knockout dress but can’t decide which hairstyle would be most flattering on you. Take a cue from the pros: less is more. If you plan on wearing a heavy necklace or earrings and your dress is strapless or has spaghetti straps or is off the shoulder, pull your hair back and away from your face. Leaving your hair down will create too much fuss around your face with all the sparkle and can be really distracting. If you don’t plan on wearing heavy jewelry with this type of dress, feel free to leave your hair long and free-flowing. Your hair will be more like an accessory in this instance. If you want your hair down and still want the sparkle, add a hair comb or some little sparkly clips to dress it up. For dresses with more fabric around the shoulders, keeping your hair swept half up or all the way up is less fussy. Don’t sweat it if you have shorter hair, though, because your hair won’t be competing with the material from your dress if it doesn’t come to your shoulders.

What about your face shape? Does that really make a difference? Yes, it does. If you have a larger face, you don’t want to draw all the attention to that fact. The actual shape of your face (round, oval, square, etc) is just a little bit less relevant than the actual size, though. For larger faces, make sure your style isn’t severe. Don’t pull all your hair in a slicked back style because no one will notice your hair at all. Leave a little around the face (like some bangs or face framing) to soften your overall style. The exact opposite is also true. If your face is small, don’t be afraid to pull it all back. Too much hair around your face can overpower it and all anyone will see is your hair.

Stay true to your personality. If you are normally the girl-next-door, stick with what you are comfortable with. Are you more punk? Keep that theme. If you try to be something you’re not on prom night, you will spend the whole night wishing you could be done with it. You won’t be comfortable with yourself and it just isn’t worth it. So dress up and have fun with it, but be true to you!
