If you’ve noticed anything in Hollywood right now, you should have picked up on the fact that a large portion of starlets and t.v. drama queens are wearing their hair long, loose, and curly in some way. Megan Fox, Heidi Montag, Rosario Dawson, Leighton Meester, Alyson Stoner, Brook Kerr, Cat Deeley… The list of celebs wearing this style is getting longer every day. And don’t feel bad if your hair is short or medium length. Just like a celebrity, you can have long hair in no time at all. Extensions can be a girl’s best friend! You want quality, though. If you are going to get them, spend the extra to have real hair instead of synthetic. The synthetic hair won’t curl with a curling iron – it will melt. To your hair. Not good. You can’t blow dry it. And if you wash it wrong, you will end up with this tangled mess that won’t ever comb out. Save yourself the hassle and heartache and splurge on the real hair. You won’t regret it. The type of curl you choose to go with depends entirely on your personal style and the look you are going for with the dress and accessories. If you are doing it yourself, experiment ahead of time with different curling options like hot rollers, curling irons in different sizes, rag rolling, pin curls, Velcro rollers… There are a lot of ways to do it. Ask your stylist for help and they can recommend the right method for the look you want.

NY Fashionista*

What I saw of the different shows at NY Fashion Week for Spring 2009 was completely opposite from what is going on in Hollywood. Seems they are trying to make their own statement! Hair on the runways (not all, but a lot of them) was slicked back into braids that were tucked under or rolled up, knots, ballerina-bun variations. And a lot of fun hats and veils, of course. What would fashion week be without that added drama? If your dress is more couture than department store, you may want to hairlift one of these styles. They are dramatic and different, and you will stand out in the crowd at prom. If you don’t want to add a funky hat, try wrapping a headband around the outside of your bun and tying it in a knot. You could even use a bow-tie like the one your date will be wearing. The key here, though, is to have your hair all pulled back, if not completely slicked, then mostly at least.

This is a prom staple. It will ALWAYS be in style! The fairytale soft romantic hairdo that you only get to wear this one night of your life is never the wrong thing to do. Making it special and unique to you is the trick, and adding your own touch to it can help add that individuality that will set you apart from the rest of the prom. What’s hot now are accessories. They don’t have to be specifically for hair. You can take pretty much anything and modify it to your needs and that will make your look more special. If you can’t find just what you are looking for at the store, try hitting the fabric store. They have fantastic trims you can buy by the yard and use as a headband. With very little effort, you can have something truly unique and still be trendy while fulfilling your lifelong dream of having princess hair for your prom.

One more trend that is good for whichever style you choose: Mystic Tan! You may not think it has anything to do with your hairstyle, but getting your tan sprayed on instead of baking it into your skin will not only help to spare you from skin cancer later on, but spray tans don’t dry out your hair like tanning beds. You know you don’t wear a cap to protect your hair when you tan, so don’t think you are immune to the nasty drying and damaging side effect it has on your hair. Stay true to your personal style and you can’t go wrong for Prom 2009!
